So much depends on what your career goals are. A college degree, at least at the start of a career, could be overkill in some instances. In other instances, it's a must. So part of the question can be answered by looking into the career field you want and seeing if a degree is required. And, if you don't know which career field to go into, probably best NOT to spend time in university taking courses that may end up not being on track for you. Get education some other way (technology boot camp, vocation certification program, etc.) and then think about a degree when you're clear about your career path.
Just for reference, companies like Google, Apple, and Hilton no longer seek college graduates for some jobs. Sir Richard Branson says that passion and drive outweigh a university degree. Daniel Ek is another successful entrepreneur with no degree. James Altucher looks at skills training and education and points out that the two are not synonyms.
So, not a slam dunk question to answer. There are pros and cons on either side. And then there's the "both" answer--which is to start in a career with a skills certificate, get some traction, and then pursue a degree.
